THE OPENING NIGHT RECEPTION OF ACCIDENTAL DEATH OF AN ANARCHIST
"NOBEL PRIZE WINNING AUTHOR DARIO FO WORK SET AT
MAIN STREET THEATER
HOUSTON - Changing the pace of the 1998-1999 season, Main Street Theater presents
a comedic work written by the 1997 winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, Dario Fo.
Fo proves his genius in this politically lunatic farce with Accidental Death Of An
Anarchist which is full of colorful characters and set in an Italian police station.
Fo's central character, "The Fool" (now considered one of the great contemporary
comic roles) has been arrested for impersonating a judge. It just so happens that several
weeks earlier in this very police station, an anarchist being questioned by the police
"accidentally" fell to his death ftom a fifth floor window. Through a series of lucky
chances and a brilliant knowledge of government and history, "The Fool" seizes the
opportunity to impersonate yet another judge and tricks the police into reopening the
examination of the "accident."
With quick changes and comic business worthy of a Marx Brothers routine, Italy's
most popular contemporary playwright proves himself a genius of biting satire as well as
broad comedy. According to Becky Udden, Founding Artistic Director for Main Street
Theater, "We first tried to present this play in the early 1980s when Fo was coming to the
attention of English-speaking playgoers."
"The story of Accidental Death Of An Anarchist was eerily reminiscent of a similar
incident in Houston, in which a man being questioned by Houston police fell into a bayou
and died. We were unable to obtain the rights then, and while the play is not so timely
politically now, it remains a brilliant work of comedy and a wickedly savage indictment
of the abuse of power in any form."
Main Street Theater audiences will undoubtedly remember Fo's The Virtuous
Burglar, the hands-down favorite from this season's "Festival of One Act Plays." Also
returning to the Main Street Theater stage are director Steve Garfinkel and actor Jef
Johnson, one of Houston's foremost physical comedians, who will play "The Fool," a
role which has quickly become one of the great comic roles in world dramatic literature.
Accidental Death Of An Anarchist opens at Main Street Theater's Times
