Tony award-winner for 2016 Best Play, the Alley Theatre presents THE HUMANS from March 1 – 24, 2019

OVERVIEW

Hopeful, heartbreaking, and at times “blisteringly funny” (The New York Times), The Humans takes place on Thanksgiving as three generations of the Blake family gather at the youngest daughter and her boyfriend’s new apartment in Lower Manhattan’s Chinatown. As darkness falls outside and around the pre-war duplex, tensions rise and secrets are divulged. The hopes and fears of each generation – and the American middle class – are revealed in this Tony® Award -winning Best Play that The New York Times hailed as “the best play of the year.”

HOUSTON  – Arriving from their home in Scranton Pennsylvania, Erik and Deirdre Blake comes to Manhattan for Thanksgiving dinner.  The Blake family gathers along with their daughter Aimee as they visit the youngest daughter Brigid at her run-down apartment in Chinatown, she shares with her boyfriend Richard.  Older daughter Aimee is a lawyer living in Philadelphia who just recently broke up with her girlfriend.

Medical issues and physical challenges the family has to deal with are Alzheimer’s suffered by Erik’s mother Fiona “Momo” played by Annalee Jefferies; as well as Aimee played by Elizabeth Bunch who has developed an intestinal ailment.  Erik’s wife Deirdre played by Sharon Lockwood takes care of the wheel-chair bound “Momo”.  The parents are not happy that their daughters have left home and abandoned their Catholic religion.

Erik Blake is played by Steve Key in this heartbreaking and hopeful play which at times finds the humor in our everyday trials and tribulations.  Elizabeth Stahlmann plays the younger daughter Brigid.  She shares the pre-war duplex apartment with her boyfriend Richard Saad played by Christopher Salazar.  Richard is about to inherit a trust fund which puts a spin in the family’s problematic mix.

A review of THE HUMANS

March 7, 2019

The play, The Humans is set in an impoverished New York City apartment.  It's all about a dysfunctional family of grownups coming together for Thanksgiving.

Each character hamany issues in their lives they have been dealing with for quite a while, especially in the last yearDespite the personal turmoil, they are still thankful for their core family, for in a way that's all they have left to keep their hearts beating.

As the play progresses, it's discovered is that there is no one in the family that can that can truly carry the load for the other. Somehow together, their collective strength is all that can get them through life.  The play shows that life is full of many twists, turns and bumps in the night. Some obstacles seem more manageable to deal with than others.
