ABOUT THE PLAY

An American Daughter was first performed as a reading at the Lincoln Center in 1996 with Meryl Streep reading the part of Lyssa. Later that year it was produced as a workshop in the New Plays Series at The Seattle Repertory Theatre. In April, 1997, it was produced at the Lincoln Center under the direction of Daniel Sullivan; the production featured Kate Nelligan as Lyssa, Lynne Thigpen as Judith, and Hal Holbrook as Alan; Ms. Thigpen received a Tony Award for her performance. The play was subsequently produced at Seattle Repertory Theatre under the direction of David Saint.

MST's production marks the Houston and regional debut of An American Daughter. MST has previously produced Ms. Wasserstein's UnCommon Women and Others (1979, 1980, 1986). The Heidi Chronicles (1992), and The Sisters Rosensweig (1998).
