Description

Based on the hit DreamWorks film and the incredible true story that inspired it, Catch Me If You Can is the high-flying, splashy new Broadway musical that tells the story of Frank W. Abagnale, Jr., a teenager who runs away from home in search of the glamorous life. With nothing more than his boyish charm, a big imagination and millions of dollars in forged checks, Frank successfully poses as a pilot, a doctor and a lawyer—living the high life and winning the girl of his dreams.

Should I see it?

 What Is Catch Me If You Can Like?
This bright and bouncy show features a topnotch cast and a sixties-influenced score by the Hairspray team of Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. Narrated by Frank as if his story is a television special, Catch Me draws audiences in to his web of relationships with his parents, FBI agent Hanratty and eventually his girlfriend and her parents. The show manages to walk the fine line of making Frank likeable in spite of his crimes. (From the show’s first scene, we know he’ll eventually pay for his misdeeds.) Whether or not you’ve seen Steven Spielberg’s hit movie based the same subject matter, if you enjoy a comic caper, Catch Me If You Can is the musical to see.

So much happened before Dorothy dropped in.

Long before that girl from Kansas arrives in Munchkinland, two girls meet in the land of Oz. One, born with emerald green skin, is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. How these two grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good makes for “the most complete—and completely satisfying—new musical in a long time” (USA Today).

Story

A vivid reimagining of the classic The Wizard of Oz, Wicked spotlights the untold stories of Oz’s most famous (or infamous) characters, namely the Wicked Witch of the West and her unlikely friend, Glinda the Good. The show follows green-skinned star Elphaba from birth to college and through the life-changing events which eventually label her “wicked,” introducing spoiled rich girl Glinda, local prince and heartthrob Fiyero and even the Wizard of Oz himself, a troubled man very unlike the one you may remember. As Elphaba, a passionate political activist if there ever was one, fights injustice and seeks to undo the mistakes of the past, dark secrets and personal tragedies shape the history of Oz, paying homage to the classic Wizard of Oz story while simultaneously changing fans’ understanding of it forever. A cautionary tale about love, friendship and trust, Wicked effortlessly reveals that there are indeed two sides to every story.

Like the The Wizard of Oz, Wicked is the definition of family-friendly. And like the classic 1939 movie, younger children may find it too long or be frightened by the show's flying monkeys, allusions to offstage violence and death of a character. Most children over eight, however, will be delighted by the world of Wicked.
