Houston: She’s wild. She’s wicked. She’s wonderful. She’s Australian superstar and international entertainment phenomenon Dame Edna. This fabulous star of stage, television and screen has dazzled audiences the world over with her unique brand of interactive humor. Much to the delight of her numerous fans, the Houston Broadway Series brings this special engagement of Dame Edna: The Royal Tour for its Houston premiere at Jones Hall from June 5 - 10, 2001. Individual tickets for all performances are now on sale at all Ticketmaster locations, online at www.Ticketmaster.com , or charge by phone by calling (713) 629-3700.

Following a record-breaking, Tony Award-winning Broadway engagement, and a sold-out San Francisco run, Dame Edna is coming to Houston to share her infinite wisdom and beauty tips with her adoring fans across the country.
The creation of Australian actor Barry Humphries, Dame Edna is a housewife, megastar, investigative journalist, social anthropologist, talk show host, children’s book illustrator, chanteuse, swami, advisor to British Royalty, spin doctor and icon. Humphries, who has been hailed a “comic megastar” by The New York Times, has shared successes with the Dame in the stage shows Housewife Superstar and A Night with Dame Edna. Television credits include two critically acclaimed UK specials, “An Audience with Dame Edna” and “Another Audience with Dame Edna,” the innovative talk show “The Dame Edna Experience” and guest appearances on numerous U.S. talk shows.

In June of 2000, Dame Edna: The Royal Tour received a Special Tony Award for a Live Theatrical Event, as well as a Drama Desk Award and an Outer Critics Circle Special Achievement Award. Other notable awards include first prize at the San Francisco International Film Festival, a Gold Award at the New York Film and TV Festival, and a British Academy Award Nomination for “The Dame Edna Experience.” Her books include Dame Edna’s Coffee Table Book, Dame Edna’s Bedside Companion, and her seminal autobiography, My Gorgeous Life.

“Uproarious! Dame Edna is a comic megastar,” exclaims The New York Times. Critics and audiences have raved that Dame Edna: The Royal Tour is “by far the funniest and cleverest show in town” (New York Post). Liz Smith, syndicated columnist, agrees: “I don’t know when I’ve had a better time in the theatre. Go right this minute and arrange your tickets!”
Dame Edna: The Royal Tour is presented by Producers Leonard Soloway, Chase Mishkin, Steven M. Levy and Jonathan Reinis. This very glamorous show has scenic design by Kenneth Foy, costume design by Stephen Adnitt, lighting design by Jason Kantrowitz, sound design by Peter Fitzgerald, as well as accompaniment from “The Fingers on the Keyboards” and dancing by two “gorgeous Ednaettes.” Dame Edna opened on Broadway October 17, 1999 and closed July 2, 2000 to get ready for her North American tour.

A LETTER FROM DAME EDNA (Him--ummm) HERSELF:

Dear Possums:

Wherever I go in the world sharing my experience, hope and strength with ecstatic audiences, I nurse a spooky little hope that one day I’ll be able to squeeze your delightful little city into my tight schedule. This time it’s going to happen! My dignified old producers saw my record-breaking, Tony Award-winning Broadway run and have been making a nuisance of themselves ever since. “Please Dame Edna,” they grovel, “Isn’t it time those theatrically deprived folk in Houston got a glimpse of you in the flesh? They’re wearing out all their old videos of all your British TV shows and they are suffering from a terminal case of EDS (Edna Deprivation Syndrome).”

Well, Possums, I’ve been pretty busy giving those culture-starved New Yorkers a real show and master-minding the Prostate Olympics to be held in the Outback in the year 2001 to raise money for my Nobel-nominated organization Friends of the Prostate. Recently, I shared my problem with the group at my local chapter of Megastars Anonymous (I’m usually the only one there!), and they all said: “Go for it Edna!” It’s a long time since those culture-starved Americans saw a real show with a real hands-on, in-your-face woman strutting her stuff and telling it like it is, in words, songs, gorgeous frocks and expensive gladioli.

So I’m coming darlings, to the Jones Hall, from June 5th through June 10th, 2001. Please buy tickets for your loved ones now, or your grandchildren will never forgive you. Look up Louisiana Street on your downtown road map and be there.

A joyous heart always,

Dame Edna
