DISNEY'S

THE LION KING
PERFORMANCES BEGIN JULY 5 FOR 8 WEEKS AT JONES HALL

JULY 5 - AUGUST 25, 2002

THE LION KING, winner of 24 major industry awards, is bringing all its awe - inspiring pageantry of costumes, masks, puppets, sets, lighting, special effects and magnificent musical numbers performed by an incomparable cast to Jones Hall, July 5 - August 25, 2002.

DISNEY'S THE LION KING, Houston's most eagerly awaited stage production, will begin performances at Jones Hall on Friday, July 5, for a limited engagement of 8 weeks through Sunday, August 25. The opening night is Tuesday, July 9 at 8 PM.

Now in its fourth sold out year in New York at the New Amsterdam Theatre, THE LION KING is the winner of 25 major awards: six Tony Awards® including Best Musical, eight Drama Desk Awards, six Outer Critics Circle Awards, the New York Drama Critics awards for Best Musical, a 1998 Theatre World Award, the Astaire Award for Outstanding Choreography, a Drama League Award and a Grammy Award® for Best Musical Show Album. In addition, director Julie Taymor became the first woman in Broadway history to win the Tony Award® for Best Director of a Musical.

Elton John & Tim Rice's original score has been expanded for the stage and now features 15 numbers, including the five from the animated film. John and Rice have written three new songs and there are additional numbers by South African Lebo M and Mark Mancina, with contributions from Julie Taymor and Hans Zimmer. The resulting sound of THE LION KING score is a fusion of Western popular music and the distinctive sounds and rhythms of Africa, embracing the Academy Award® winning song "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" and the haunting "Shadowlands."

In Houston, THE LION KING will play Tuesdays - Fridays at 8 PM, Saturdays at 2 PM and 8 PM, Sundays at 1 PM and 6:30 PM. Ticket prices range from $19.25 to $76.25. Tickets are available at the Jones Hall box office, all Ticketmaster locations, and online at www.ticketmaster.com. To charge tickets, call 713/ 629-3700. Orders for groups of twenty (20) or more may be placed by calling 713/ 693-2692 or 1-888-451-5986.

The Houston engagement of THE LION KING is presented by arrangement with Society for the Performing Arts and is a subscription offering of the 2001-02 Broadway in Houston series.

Along with its daring design and direction from Director Julie Taymor, the score for THE LION KING blends American popular music from composer Elton John and lyricist Tim Rice, with African rhythms featuring songs by South African song writer Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, and Hans Zimmer, The Rhythm of the Pride Lands recording, into a seamless and completely new whole.
