Houston Grand Opera will welcome a truly powerful figure when 61st Secretary of State James A.
Baker III speaks at its next Business Alliance networking breakfast sponsored by Conoco on
Tuesday April 21 at 7:30 am.
James Baker will speak about current world events and the activities of the Baker Institute. He is
honorary chairman of Rice University's Baker Institute for Public Policy and a member of the Rice
Univerisity Board of Governors. In addition to serving as the 61st Secretary of State, Mr. Baker
was Secretary of State of the Treasury from 1985-1988 for the Reagan administration. He is a
senior partner in the law firm of Baker and Botts and senior counselor to the Carlyle Group.
Baker's family has long been identified with Rice. His grandfather, Capt. James A. Baker, was the
founding chairman of the university's board of trustees, serving from the chartering of Rice in 1891
until his death in 1941.
Houston Grand Opera's Business Alliance provides a forum where business executives meet
distinguished corporate, civic and political leaders. The Business Alliance Breakfast series is
chaired by Archie W. Dunham, President and CEO of Conoco.
