Based on Victor Hugo’s classic novel, LES MISERABLES is an epic saga that sweeps through three turbulent decades of 19th century France. It is also the story of one man, the fugitive Jean Valjean, who is pitted against the cruel and self - righteous Inspector Javert in a lifelong struggle to evade capture. Now in its 15th year in London and 14th year on Broadway, LES MISERABLES has won 50 major awards internationally, including the 1987 Tony Award for Best Musical.

The 4.2 million production coming to Houston replicates the Broadway production in its entirety and has set numerous attendance records across the country. Seen by over 40 million people worldwide, LES MISERABLES is one of the most successful musicals in theatre history. The show’s global box office receipts now exceed $1.8 billion. There have been over 31,000 performances of LES MISERABLES throughout the world, in 38 productions, in 29 countries and 18 languages. There have been 31 cast recordings of the musical, including the multi - platinum original London cast album, the Grammy Award - winning Broadway cast recording, the Grammy Award - winning complete symphonic version, and London 10th Anniversary Concert Recording.

On March 12, 1997 the Broadway production of LES MISERABLES celebrated its 10th Anniversary, featuring a new company of actors, changes in staging, scenery refurbishment, lighting design modifications, a new state of the art sound system and all new costumes and wigs. Houston audiences will see these same enhancements to the show, as they were subsequently incorporated into the national company. The changes have also been added to the original London production and the British national company.

Written by Boublil and Schonberg, LES MISERABLES was adapted from the French by Herbert Kretzmer, and has additional material by James Fenton. It was first brought to life at the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Barbican Theatre in London by co - directors Trevor Nunn and John Caird, the team behind the RSC’s triumphant production of The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby.

LES MISERABLES has been designed by John Napier (sets), Adreane Neofitou (costumes) and David Hersey (lighting), the award - winning team collectively responsible for the look of such Broadway smashes as Miss Saigon, Cats, Nicholas Nickleby and Starlight Express.
