Przechadzki - O Krakowie, March 27th, 2004 at the University of St. Thomas Jones Hall

March 27, 2004 Houston, Texas - At 6:00pm, the evening started with a greeting from the Director Mrs. Malgorzata Mucha. The audience was entertained with poetry and beautiful songs rich in Polish culture and tradition. Mrs. Mucha, who organized the whole event, describes the most enchanting theatrical presentation:

"Here, the finest foods and brewed ales will nourish him, and worthy music will bring joy to his ears…"

This is how Krakow welcomed its guests according to old Polish tradition. And this is how, our dear guests, we welcome you tonight. In Houston, but within the city walls of Krakow, among the colorful bunches of flowers, amidst beautiful architecture, you will discover legends, traditions, poetry and music.

The beauty of Krakow will cast its unique spell on you tonight. An enchanted carriage will take you, dear viewer, with us through the streets of the city. The horse, which "had real ears", will pause quietly by Florian Street to remember the creative irony of "Words" by Krakow doctor, Boy-Zelenski, connoisseur of human souls rather than human bodies. Later, on a cold and foggy November night, we will continue our journey to reminisce about difficult times. The straw man in Wyspianski's "Wedding" will offer us a glimpse into the souls of those who strove to change the course of Polish history.

We'll arrive on the Main Square, always full of people, song and dance; we'll listen to the hejnal (hey-now) from St. Mary's Church, and to Zygmunt's bell. The most beautiful poetry will fill our ears. We'll descend into one famous cellar bar, to pause in place and time. Boundaries between the heaven and the earth will disappear. The good ghost of master Skrzynecki will recall the warmth of his words and his music.

The whole spectacle was created out of love - love for the literature, poetry, and history of My City. It was created in the memory of those who feel the same way, and for those who want to remember and listen with me. For the past several months, our wonderful 20-person cast worked hard to prepare for tonight's event, so that you, dear guests, might join us for the journey. Let's dive into the enchanting ambiance of Krakow, recalling the words of contemporary poet Krzysztof Koehler…

"…and the chatter began at the hour of dusk, of the towers of all the churches which are here…I lifted my eyes and slowly (it) tore through space…"
