BETTY'S SUMMER VACATION
The Simultaneously Funny and Serious CHRISTOPHER DURANG's Screwball Dark Comedy BETTY'S SUMMER VACATION which was "written initially as a reaction to a glut of high-profile, gruesome and wildly personal court cases that seemed to capture the nation's consciousness on television." You know, Stuff like OJ Simpson, Gianni Versace and Andrew Cunanan, Robert Blake Beretta..... Don't Miss BETTY'S SUMMER VACATION, Now Playing through May 27th, 2001 at Stages Repertory Theatre.

Houston, Tx - Stages Repertory Theatre presents the Houston premiere of Christopher Durang’s Betty’s Summer Vacation, a scathingly funny take on the reality TV and tell-all talk shows that modern audiences seem to crave. Directed by Stages Artistic Director Rob Bundy, BETTY’S SUMMER VACATION previews May 2 and 3 and opens on Friday, May 4th, 2001. Performances are Wednesdays through Sundays through May 27, 2001. For mature audiences.

When innocent Betty rents a vacation house with her best friend and a group of strangers, she wants nothing more than a relaxing summer vacation. Instead, she finds herself caught up in a whirlwind of sex, violence, and Court TV, complete with commentary from a mysterious group of voices that haunts the house with a raucous laugh track. Betty is joined by a host of unforgettable characters, including a flasher, a serial killer, and the flamboyant Mrs. Seizmagraff, as Durang proves once again that no subject is safe from his penetrating wit.

The New York Times calls BETTY’S SUMMER VACATION “relentlessly fierce, relentlessly funny” and the Washington Post calls it “undeniably hilarious.”

“We’re skirting the edge of propriety - this play is so naughty, and so perfectly Stages,” Bundy said. “We’re doing this for the Houston audience that loves dangerous humor.”

Bundy’s cast mixes seasoned veterans with promising new faces as Stages favorites Sally Edmundson (Full Gallop, Quills, Coyote Ugly) and Alex Kilgore (Refuge, The Pitchfork Disney) join newcomers such as Julia Krohn (daughter of Alley actor Charles Krohn) and Joey Berner.

BETTY’S SUMMER VACATION garnered a coveted Drama Desk nomination for Outstanding New Play as well as four Obies for Durang, known for humorous treatment of difficult subjects. Past hits include Sister Mary Ignatius Explans It All For You, Beyond Therapy, and Laughing Wild, all of which enjoyed successful runs at Stages.

Single tickets are available at 713-527-8243 or at Stages Box Office, 3201 Allen Parkway at Waugh Drive. Preview tickets are $19 - $23 (May 2 and 3 only). Regular tickets are $32 - $42.
