Stages Repertory Theatre presents the Houston Debut of ROMANCE / ROMANCE, which blends 19th century and contemporary styles. ROMANCE / ROMANCE runs through December 30th, 2001 at Stages Repertory Theatre (3201 Allen
Parkway at Waugh Drive).
HOUSTON, TX Nominated for three Tony Awards Best Original Score, Best Book, and Best Lyrics Romance /
Romance opens at Stages on November 20, 2001 and runs through December 30.
Called
smart, bubbly and ardent by the New York Times and
a double-dollop of romantic spirit by the New York
Post, Romance / Romance, directed by Chesley Krohn, blends nineteenth-century and contemporary styles. At a time when
we are examining what is important in our lives, says Krohn, this play gives us an opportunity to feel the excitement and
rejuvenation that only romance can offer.
Joanne Bonasso returns to Stages after appearances in I Love You, Youre Perfect, Now Change and Company, and Tom
Prior - who appeared in Elizabeth Rex as William Shakespeare - returns for his first Stages musical. Jennie Welch and
Jonathan McVay complete this powerful ensemble, which will lead audiences through the centuries in a celebration of
courtship, relationships, and fidelity.
Romance / Romance is the creation of Keith Herrmann (music) and Barry Harman (Book and Lyrics). Herrmann, a veteran of
Broadway, conducted Cats and performed on its Grammy Award-winning album; other credits include Onward Victoria, The
Magic Show, Whoopee, Godspell, Censored Scenes from King Kong, and Broadways Prom Queens Unchained. Harman,
winner of numerous Outer Critics Circle Awards and two Drama Desk Nominations, is also the winner of two Emmy Awards
for his contributions to The Carol Burnett Show and All In the Family.
Based on a short story by Arthur Schnitzler, Act One, The Little Comedy, takes place in 1890s Vienna, where a dashing
aristocrat and a firey young woman take on new identities in hopes of finding true love.
Act Two, Summer Share, is set in the present-day Hamptons, a perfect setting for a romantic vacation for two
happily-married couples. This uproarious study of the joys and complexities of modern relationships is based on Pain de
Menage by Jules Renard.
Performances are Wednesday and Thursday at 7:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday at 8:00 p.m., and Sunday at 3:00 p.m.
