HOUSTON, TEXAS
Theatre Under The Stars (TUTS) becomes the first company in America to secure the rights to
produce Miss Saigon, the award-winning musical that opens TUTS' 2001 Season from March 20-April 1, 2001 at the Arena
Theatre (7326 Southwest Freeway). Inspired by Puccini's opera Madame Butterfly, Miss Saigon recounts the moving story of
a young Vietnamese woman who falls in love with a U.S. Marine. TUTS' production of this worldwide hit trails the closing of
the Broadway production, which grossed more than $1.3 billion internationally and was the sixth-longest-running show in
Broadway history.
Winner of three Tony Awards, two Olivier Awards and four Drama Desk Awards, Miss Saigon is based on the book by
Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg, featuring lyrics by Alain Boublil and Richard Maltby, Jr. and music by
Claude-Michel Schonberg. Boublil and Schonberg were also responsible for the musical re-telling of Victor Hugo's Les
Miserables. Through their musical and lyrical compositions, Boublil and Schonberg together with Maltby are successful in
conjuring up steamy nights, crowds, lust and the danger of Saigon 1975. Songs such as "I Still Believe" and "The Last Night of
the World" evoke the love and pain experienced by the doomed lovers.
Since its World Premiere in 1989, Miss Saigon has played in seven different languages, in 11 countries and 70 cities. Bruce
Lumpkin will serve as director and choreographer for TUTS' version of Miss Saigon. Previous TUTS' productions directed
by Lumpkin include Grand Hotel and Gigi. Miss Saigon also includes many performers who are re-creating their Broadway
roles such as Hinton Battle (John), who is the only living male to be a three-time Tony Award-winner, including one for Miss
Saigon; Emy Baysic (Kim), who has also performed Off-Broadway in Séance for an Edge Dancer; Sean McDermott (Chris)
whose other Broadway credits include the role of Danny Zuko in the recent Broadway revival of Grease and James Lapine's
Falsettos; Edmund Nalzaro (Thuy), who also understudied for the Miss Saigon National tour; Joseph Anthony Foronda (The
Engineer), who also originated the role of Lord Buntaro in the Broadway production of James Clavell's Shogun: The Musical;
and Misty Cotton (Ellen), who also performed the role of Ellen in the first National Tour.
"You are Sunlight and I, Moon joined here bright'ning the sky with the flame of Love, made of Sunlight, Moonlight." "A Song, played on a solo saxophone, a crazy sound, a lonely sound, a cry that tells us Love goes on and on. Played on a solo saxophone, it's telling me to hold you tight and dance like it's the last night of the world."
