HOUSTON (December, 2015) – Theatre Under The Stars
(TUTS) Underground presents an unconventional holiday musical in
Striking 12, on stage from December 17 -
23, 2015 in Zilkha Hall at the Hobby Center for the
Performing Arts. Striking 12 is presented in a
new format for Underground, in a novel
band-as-the-actors format, playing the piano, drums and
a super-cool six-string Viper violin.
With a message that speaks to kids from one to 92,
choosing a story that brings people together is a
perennial holiday tradition for TUTS. This second show
of the TUTS Underground season, originally performed by
New York-based trio Groovelily at Broadway supper club
54 Below, reminds audiences of what’s really
important this holiday season – caring for each other.
In this story told through a concert, three musicians
present a story of a man who’s done with holiday cheer,
a Seasonal Affective Disorder light saleswoman, and The
Little Match Girl of Hans Christian Anderson’s classic
tale. Wit and warmth mark this tale highlighting the
difficulty of connecting with others when our own
sorrows seem overwhelming. Touching on the disconnected
nature of a society in which we define ourselves by
work, the three stories intersect for a feel-good ending
without the hype of holiday lights.
