Adding even more sizzle to Theatre Under The Stars' summer season, the Houston premiere of The
Scarlet Pimpernel brings swashbuckling comic adventure to the stage of the Brown Theater of
Wortham Center through August 22. Directed and choreographed by Robert Longbottom, this
Broadway company stars Ron Bohmer, 1999 Tony nominee Carolee Carmello and Marc Kudisch.
Hailed by critics as the musical "topped only by The Lion Kingfor sheer escapist entertainment,"
The Scarlet Pimpernel is based on the classic novels of Baroness @Orczy about a dashing English
aristocrat who disguises himself to enter France and save countless lives from the guillotine.
Nominated for a 1998 Tony Award as Best Musical, this high-energyswashbuckleristhesecond
Broadwayopus of Jekyll& Hydeand The Civil War composer Frank Wildhorn. The
Tony-nominated libretto is by Nan Knighton.
Still causing a rash of "scarlet fever" in New York, The Scarlet Pimpernel has ref reshed its cast
and sandwiched three summer engagements -- Dallas, Houston and Atlanta -- between its just
concluded two-year stand at Broadway's Minskoff Theatre and its new home at Broadway's Neil
Simon Theatre, where it opens on September 1 0. Produced by Radio City Entertainment and Ted
Fortsmann, with Tim Hawkins as Executive Producer, this exclusive mid-Broadway engagement is
presented in Houston as part of TUTS' 1999 subscription season.

Production History
Produced by Radio City Entertainment and Ted Forstmann, The Scarlet Pimpemel has had a path
as remarkably courageous as the characters in its story. In the fall of 1998, after the show was
acquired from its original producers, Robert Longbottom was brought on board to re-direct and
choreograph, as well as re- cast two of the three lead roles. The revised production re-opened on
November 4, 1999, to critical acclaim and has become a bona fide crowd-pleaser. The current
summer engagements and subsequent return to New York City's Neil Simon Theatre has solidly
earned The Scariet Pimpemel its subtitle of Broadway's Most Intriguing Musical.
