HOUSTON, TX…Theatre Under The Stars is proud to announce that LEGALLY BLONDE THE MUSICAL begins performances at The Hobby Center for Performing Arts in downtown Houston, February 10 – 22, 2009!

Sorority star Elle Woods doesn't take "no" for an answer.  When her boyfriend dumps her for someone more “serious,” Elle puts down the credit card, hits the books, and sets out to go where no Delta Nu has gone before: Harvard Law. Along the way, Elle proves that being true to yourself never goes out of style.

In its first year on Broadway, LEGALLY BLONDE THE MUSICAL earned seven 2007 Tony Award nominations, 10 2007 Drama Desk Award Nominations, a 2007 Outer Critics Circle Award and the chorus of the musical was honored by Actors’ Equity Association’s Advisory Committee on Chorus Affairs (ACCA) with the first ever ACCA Award.  The musical also ranked in the top ten list of the most requested Ticketmaster “Arts & Theatre Events” for 2007.

Becky Gulsvig, the Elle understudy in the original Broadway cast, is Elle Woods on tour. Fans of the MTV reality show “Legally Blonde The Musical: The Search for Elle Woods,” which premiered June 2, 2008, will recognize two familiar faces in the tour casting: third runner-up Rhiannon Hansen plays Elle’s best friend Margot and fourth runner-up Lauren Zakrin is an ensemble member and understudies the role of Elle.  The reality show represented the musical’s second venture with MTV.  In the fall of 2007, MTV aired Legally Blonde The Musical  in its entirety to stellar ratings and was subsequently nominated for two 2007-2008 Daytime Emmy Awards.

The Original Broadway Cast Recording for “Legally Blonde The Musical,” was released on Ghostlight Records, an imprint of Sh-K-Boom Records, and captured the #1 slot on the Billboard Cast Album chart and charted at #86 on the Billboard Top 200.  The album has continued its success, charting every week as one of the top-selling Broadway cast recordings and soared to the Top 10 albums (of any genre) on iTunes once the show premiered on MTV.

As on Broadway, Tony Award-winner Jerry Mitchell is the director and choreographer.  Music and lyrics are by both Laurence O’Keefe and Nell Benjamin, and the book is by Heather Hach.  The production features scenic design by David Rockwell, costume design by Gregg Barnes, lighting design by Kenneth Posner and Paul Miller, orchestrations by Christopher Jahnke and sound design by ACME Sound Partners.

LEGALLY BLONDE AND DELIRIOUSLY HAPPY!!!

A Review of Theatre Under The Stars’ Legally Blonde the Musical

By Theresa Pisula

Valentine's Day February 14, 2009
Houston, Texas USA

In preparation for the coming of the big blockbuster musical Legally Blonde, I went to the salon the weekend before the show started and got my nails done.  Of course I wanted to be prepared to meet Elle Woods in her regal style so I got a manicure and a pedicure and my color of choice is Perpetually Pink.  This is not just any pink (of course!) it’s of a lighter, more subtle shade of pink, more of a pastel.  But still it was deliciously pink, one that Elle Woods would definitely approve.

On the day of this momentous event, I got dressed in my baby pink cotton sweater from Ann Taylor and paired with my New York & Co. pink/black & white print skirt.  The shoes are red sling back stilettos from Nine West which I was prepared to suffer in all night long walking up and down the long spiral staircase of the Hobby Center.

I invited a friend of mine who asked me back in December (on her birthday no less!) if I could take her to see the musical.  Why not?  We both loved the movie starring Reese Witherspoon and we love musical theatre as well.  I met my friend at the simply spectacular Artista restaurant with the majestic view of downtown Houston.  As the pianist tickled the ivories of our favorite musical tunes by the baby grand piano bar, the handsome waiter served each of us a glass of wine, specifically Chateau Sainte Michelle Chardonnay.  My friend had the fillet mignon, served medium rare with the side of mascarpone potatoes and mushrooms.  I had the baby spinach and crab meat salad drizzled with hazelnut-dill vinaigrette.

After dinner which was deliciously divine, we were getting ready to enter the theater to see the show when she suddenly stopped and said she had to go to the ladies room.  I handed her the ticket and told her I would see her inside.  Well guess what?  She never came back.  Why?  I don’t know why, last I heard she just needed to go to the ladies room.

As I sat down on my designated seat, I met the most charming lady sitting right next to me.  She introduced herself as Krystal A. Tyler and she was beaming from ear to ear.  She told me that she is so excited because this is one of her first musicals since she got hired as an On-Air Broadcaster / Producer at KHCB 105.7 Houston.  And like Elle Woods, she just got out of college and is starting a new life with her new career.

Legally Blonde the Musical starts and the scene opens with Elle Woods at a department store (of course!) shopping for the perfect pink dress for the evening.  That night, she is supposed to have dinner with her boyfriend who is taking her to the most romantic restaurant and she thinks he is about to propose to her.  Elle Woods’ girl friends are so excited about this prospect that they do this song and dance routine……..

OMIGOD YOU GUYS

GIRLFRIENDS:  Dear Elle, he's a lucky guy.  I’m, like, gonna cry.  I got tears coming out of my nose.  Madd props!  He's the campus catch.  You're a perfect match ‘cuz you both got such great taste in clothes.  Of course he will propose

Dear Elle, honey maseltav.  Your future’s taking off.  Bring back that ring back and show it to me.  4 carats, a princess cut.  Are you psyched or what?!  I just wish I could be there to see when he gets down on one knee.

Omigod, omigod, you guys.  Looks like Elle's gonna win the prize.  If there ever was a perfect couple, this one qualifies.  Omigod, you guys, omigod, this is happening.  Our own homecoming queen and king, finally she'll be trying on a huge engagement ring for size.  Omigod, you guys.  Omigod!

Okay.  Everybody signed.  Now fall in line and we'll start the engagement parade.  Light candles in single style.  Don’t forget to smile.  Lose the gum Kate, you look like a maid.  Now here's a serenade…

Omigod, omigod, you guys.  Looks like Elle's gonna win the prize.  If there ever was a perfect couple, this one qualifies.  Omigod, you guys, omigod, this is happening.  Our own homecoming queen and king…finally she'll be trying on a huge engagement ring for size.  Omigod, you guys

Elle and Warner were meant to be.  Not once has he ever hit on me.  They’re just like that couple from Titanic, only no one dies.  Omigod.  2-3-4…daughter of Delta-Nu…soon to be fiancée…now that a man's chosen you.  Your life begins today.  Make him a happy home.  Wait on his hard earned wage.  And so he does not go.  Try not to look your age.  Tell him just what you need.  Let it be understood.  No man could foresee our bond of sisterhood.  Omigod, omigod, you guys

GIRLFRIENDS: "Bruiser, where is Elle?"
 (Bark)
"She's doesn’t have an engagement outfit?"
(Bark)
"She's totally freaking out?"
(Bark)
"She's trapped in the old valley mill?"
(Bark)
"Oh sorry, the Old Valley Mall"

omigod, omigod, omigod, omigod, omigod, omigod, omigod, omigod

ELLE:  This dress needs to seal the deal.  Make a grown man kneel.  But I can’t come right out and say bride.  Can’t look like I’m desperate or I’m waiting for it.  I gotta leave Warner his pride so bride is more implied.   Omigod, omigod, you guys.  All this week I’ve had butterflies.  Every time he looks at me it’s totally proposalized.  Omigod you guys.  So help me dress for my fairytale.  Can’t wear something I bought on sale.  Love is , like, forever.  This is no time to economize.  Omigod, you guys.

GIRLFRIENDS:  (whisper) Omigod, omigod, you guys.  Elle saw right through that salesgirl's eyes

ELLE:  I maybe in love but I’m not stupid.  Lady, I’ve got eyes.

SALESGIRL:  Omigod, Elle Woods.  Sorry, our mistake.  Courtney, take your break.  Just ignore her.  She hasn’t been well.  Try this!  It’s the latest from Milan.  Go on, try it on.  I take care of my best clientele.  Its a gift from me to Elle

ELLE:  Omigod, omigod, you guys.  This one's perfect and it’s just my size.  See, dreams really do come true, you don’t have to compromise.  Omigod you guys

GIRLFRIENDS:  Omigod, omigod you guys.  Elle's been hoping for someone right.  If there was ever a perfect couple this would qualify ‘cuz we love you guys

ELLE: No I love you guys

GIRLFRIENDS:  omigod, omigod, omigod.  You guys!  omigod!!

So Elle Woods gets the perfect dress to wear to the most perfect date with the most perfect guy Warner Huntington III.  And during the most perfectly romantic dinner, instead of the anticipated engagement proposal, Warner breaks up with her.  That’s right ladies and gentlemen Elle Woods gets dumped right there on the spot.  Wait a minute didn’t that just happen to me tonight?  Well, not exactly but pretty close.  Like Elle Woods, I get rejected feeling soooo dejected.  On the inside, Elle and I are feeling oh so blue even though I’m dressed in pink from my top to my pretty little toe nails.  How can this be?  This is not supposed to happen…..

What I learned from watching Elle Woods and Legally Blonde the Musical is that the story is not about how pretty in pink Elle is or how charming her life could be.  It is not about how successful her accomplishments are.  The moral of the story stems from all of Elle Woods’ failures and disappointments.  And that how she is able to overcome all of that by a simple song and dance routine.  And how - no matter what life throws at her, she becomes deliriously happy again because of the support from her cheerleader girl friends and encouragement from Paulette, the new lady she met at the salon that does her nails.

So after Elle gets over this MAJOR disappointment, she resolves to follow her ex-boyfriend Warner Huntington III to Harvard and try to win him back.  She gets into Harvard and works really hard to get in no matter how difficult it is (oh, like its hard?).  Once she gets inside Harvard, she schemes a way to confront her ex.  The Harvard campus confrontation results in Elle Woods inadvertently meeting her ex-boyfriend’s current fiancée.  Now normally, such a setback would discourage any regular person to pack her Louis Vuittons and go home.  But not Elle!  She does not take “NO” for an answer.  She forges on and completes her Harvard law degree and moves on with her life as a respectable attorney in a prestigious law firm.  And all the while, she hurdles through more defeating and upsetting situations on the way (if you can believe that!).

That Elle Woods is one tough cookie!!!

During intermission, it became devastatingly clear to me that my so-called friend is never coming back to watch the show.  It was undeniable, I got stood up!  Krystal Tyler, my new friend and KHCB 105.7 broadcast personality assured me “Don’t worry about it.  She is so stupid for leaving.  It’s her loss!”  And I responded, “But you don’t understand, I’m wearing all pink tonight.  Things like this are not supposed to happen.”  And then we proceeded to talk about how great the show is.  Krystal and her good, sweet friend were so comforting to me.  They know all about LEGALLY BLONDE the movie and are ecstatic about how much better the musical is.  “Why do you think that is so?”  I asked.  Well because of all the singing and dancing.  Musicals just make everything so much better.  And the animals, Krystal loves Elle’s Chihuahua named Bruiser and there is Rufus the bulldog who completely steals the show.  Krystal comments that the dogs are so well trained.

DOGGIE DOSSIER

Frankie (Bruiser) is only a year old and was found as a stray in Meriden, CT.  He was rescued from Animal Control there and quickly adapted to living in a home.  He loves to bark and play tag with Roxy.  His other favorite pastime is sleeping on top of other dogs.

China (Rufus) came from a backyard breeding situation in upstate New York where even as a young dog she was being made to produce litter after litter.  A concerned neighbor was able to convince the owner to place China into rescue.  At first she seemed like a quiet dog to her foster owner until it was discovered that she was suffering from multiple forms of worms and both an eye and tail infection.  Now on the mend, this 3 year old is all bully and ready for her debut.

Both dogs have their own understudies.

Right before Act II starts, I turn around and meet Houston's TV personality and hometown celebrity Anthony Yanez.  He is KPRC Channel 2’s Weatherman and I watch him every morning on TV to see what the weather will be.  In fact, I told him, “I was just watching you this morning and I saw that you had the picture of TUTS Hobby Center for the Performing Arts!”  (I was so excited!)  He introduced me to his beautiful young daughter who looks like……why she happens to look just like Elle Woods.  Except if I remember correctly, she had long strawberry blonde hair going all the way down her back.  Elle Woods’ blonde locks are just shoulder-length.

Anthony Yanez, KPRC Channel 2 Houston's Weatherman.

I commented to Mr. Yanez that he doesn’t look old enough to have a teenage daughter.  And just like Elle Woods, being the social climber that I am, I took the opportunity to question him of his knowledge of Legally Blonde.  After all, here I am, rubbing elbows with a true TV celebrity.  “Just out of curiosity,” I asked, “do you think that Reese Witherspoon who produced and starred in Legally Blonde the Movie has anything to do with the Musical?”  He answers, “I don’t think so.  She showed up for a brief moment to kick off the premiere of the MTV show.  But that was all as far as her involvement with the musical goes.”  I nodded in agreement, trying to keep my composure when inside of me, I was bursting with excitement.

The second act did not disappoint as we enjoyed several uplifting musical numbers such as “Take It Like A Man”.  Elle Woods’ law firm is commissioned to represent Brooke Wyndham a millionaire client who happens to be a fitness trainer who is accused of murdering her husband.  Elle attempts to save the case because their client will only confide in her because they both happen to be Delta Nu Sorority sisters.

During the courtroom drama, the accused client’s pool boy testifies that he is having an affair with the defendant.  Elle Woods goes on to prove the pool boy is wrong because he can’t possibly be having an affair with the defendant.  Elle Woods is determined to prove that the pool boy is gay!

THERE!  RIGHT THERE!

Elle:  There! Right There!  Look at that tan that tinted skin.  Look at the killer shape he's in.  Look at that slightly stubbly chin.  Oh please he's gay, totally gay.

Callahan:  I'm not about to celebrate.  Every trait could indicate the totally straight expatriate.  This guy's not gay, I say not gay.

All:  That is the elephant in the room.  Well is it relevant to assume that a man who wears perfume is automatically radically fey?

Emmett:  But look at his coiffed and crispy locks.

Elle:  Look at his silk translucent socks.

Callahan:  There's the eternal paradox.  Look what we're seeing.

Elle:  What are we seeing?

Callahan:  Is he gay?

Elle:  Of course he's gay.

Calahan:  Or European?

All:  Ohhhhhh, Gay or European?  It's hard to guarantee.  Is he gay or European?

Warner:  Well, hey don't look at me.

Vivian:  You see they bring their boys up different in those charming foreign ports.  They play peculiar sports.

All:  In shiny shirts and tiny shorts.  Gay or foreign fella?  The answer could take weeks.  They will say things like "ciao bella" while they kiss you on both cheeks.

Elle:  Oh please.

All:  Gay or European?  So many shades of gray….

Warner:  Depending on the time of day, the French go either way.

All:  Is he gay or European?  Or…..

Enid:  There! Right There!  Look at that condescending smirk, seen it on every guy at work.  That is a metro hetero jerk.  That guy's not gay, I say no way.

All:  That is the elephant in the room.  Well is it relevant to presume that a hottie in that costume

Elle:  Is automatically-radically

Callahan:  Ironically chronically

Vivian:  Certainly pertinently

Warner:  Genetically medically

All:  GAY!  OFFICIALLY GAY!  OFFICIALLY GAY, GAY, GAY, GAY!  DAMNIT!  Gay or European?

Callahan:  So stylish and relaxed.

All:  Is he gay or European?

Callahan:  I think his chest is waxed.

Vivian:  But they bring their boys up different there.  It's culturally diverse.  It's not a fashion curse.

All:  If he wears a kilt or bears a purse.  Is he gay or just exotic?  I still can't crack the code.

Brooke:  Yet his accent is hypnotic but his shoes are pointy toed.

All:  Huh.  Gay or European?  So many shades of gray……….

Judge:  But if he turns out straight I'm free at eight on Saturday.

All:  Is he gay or European?  Gay or european?  Gay or Euro-

Emmett:  Wait a minute!  Give me a chance to crack this guy.  I have an idea I'd like to try.

Callahan:  The floor is yours.

Emmett:  So Mr. Argitacos......this alleged affair with Ms. Windam has been going on for...?

Mikos:  2 years.

Emmett:  And your first name again is...?

Mikos:  Mikos.

Emmett:  And your boyfriend's name is...?

Mikos:  Carlos.  I'm sorry!  I misunderstand. You say boyfriend.  I thought you say best friend.  Carlos is my best friend.

Carlos:  You bastard!  You lying bastard!  That's it.  I no cover for you, no more!  Peoples, I have a big announcement.  This man is Gay and European!  You've got to stop your being a completely closet case.  No matter what he say.  I swear, he never ever, ever swing the other way.  You are so gay.  You big parfait!  You flaming boy band cabaret.

Mikos:  I'm straight!

Carlos:  You were not yesterday.  So if I may, I'm proud to say.  He's gay!

All:  And European!

Carlos:  He's gay!

All:  And European!

Carlos:  He's gay!

All:  And European and Gay!

Mikos:   Fine okay I'm gay!

All:  Hooray!

Mikos and Carlos:  Fine. Okay. We're gay!

See how extremely hilarious and deliriously happy Legally Blonde the Musical is?  It made me truly forget about all my worries.  And in the continuing tradition of girl power, Elle Woods and her cheerleading friends teach Paulette, Elle’s manicurist from the nail salon on how a girl can tell whether a man is gay or heterosexual.  They instruct Paulette on how to do the “Bend and Snap” so that you can build your confidence and catch the man you want.

BEND AND SNAP

GIRL:  Look at my ass.  Look at my thighs.  I'm catnip to the guys.  They chase my tail.  They drool and pant.  Wanna touch this but they can't.  No! All the boys want to come and play.  Snap my fingers and they obey.  Why do they follow me around all day?  Watch me while I walk away

I bend and snap.  Feel how hot it's getting bend and snap.  Then when you got ‘em sweatin’ - spring the trap.  They cheer and clap.  No tight end can defend against the bend and snap.

PAULETTE:  Oh that's easy for you to say!

ELLE:  And you!  Girl if you want to make the team, then fake some self esteem

GIRL:  The more you jump around and scream, the sexier you seem

PAULETTE:  Sorry girls that ain't how I play.  This wouldn't work if I tried all day.  I gotta go get my asthma spray.  Watch me while I walk away

ELLE:  No wait before you walk away.  Just bend and snap

PAULETTE:  OW!!!!

ELLE:  Look how good you're gettin'!  Bend and snap!

GIRL:  I bet right now you sweatin'

ALL:  Spring the trap.  They cheer and clap.  So depend on your friend for the bend...

ELLE:  It's not the time to over think.  Just try it once.  He'll buy you a drink

GIRL:  Excuse me would you teach me that.  I am tired of living alone with my cat

ELLE:  Sure!

GIRL:  Nowadays I do dye jobs and curls.  But here's how we did it in the Laker Girls.  Come on Paulette!

ELLE:  You'll be fine!

GUY:  Works every time!

GIRL:  Look, do it and we'll go away

PAULETTE:  Okay! Okay! Okay! Okay!

ALL:  BEEEEEEEENNNNND ANNNND SNAP!

GUYS:  DAMN!!!!

PAULETTE:  Hey wait a second.  When I beckoned, look how the guys came runnin' like I'm…

GUYS:  Kickin!

PAULLETTE:  Finger

GUYS:  Lickin'!

PAULETTE:  Like I'm frickin'

GUYS:  Wicked stunnin'!

PAULETTE:  Will you pay for stuff I buy?

GUYS:  YES!

PAULETTE:  And bake me cake and pie?

GUYS:  YES!

PAULETTE:  And hold me when I cry?

GUYS:  YES!

PAULETTE:  And I will tell you why!

GUYS:  Why?

PAULETTE:  I'm too rockin' to lock away.  All the boys come to gawk away.  Droppin' jaws from a block away.  Watchin' how I walk away.

GUYS:  Love to watch her walk away!

PAULETTE:  I depend on my friend

ALL:  Go Paulette! Go Paulette!

PAULETTE:  I depend on my friend

ALL:  Go! Go! Go Paulette!

PAULETTE:  I depend on my friend called the Bend and Snap!

ALL:  The bend and snap.  Bend and snap.  Bend and snap.  Bend and snap.  Bend and snap.  Bend and snap

PAULETTE:  I'M GONNA GET ME SOME KYLE!!!

KYLE:  Paulette!  Did I leave my...stylus?

ALL:  BENNNNND AND SNAP!

PAULETTE:  Eeeeeh!!! Oh crap!

So please, please, please, pretty please with sugar on top!!!  Do not miss Legally Blonde.  Don’t be stupid enough like my so-called friend who walked away.  I promise you it will make your day.  It will have you singing in rhymes (like me!) whether you’re straight or gay.  LEGALLY BLONDE will make you forget your worries and others' evil plays.  It will make you dance and put the spring in your step and have you on your merry way!!!
